Make homemade hummus, the right way

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make hummus at home.

Step 2: Gather the tools you'll need

  • Blender or food processor (anything with spinning blades will work)
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Spatula
  • Citrus squeezer
  • Can opener
  • 1 Tbsp. measuring spoon
  • 1/4 C. measuring cup
  • A small utensil (I used a spoon, but anything long and small will work)
  • Zester (optional)
  • Bench scraper (optional)

Step 3: Prepare your ingredients

  • 1 can (about 16oz, or 2 C.) of garbanzo beans, drained
  • 1 fresh lemon
    • 1/4 Tbsp. of zest
    • All of the juice
  • 1/4 C. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp. ground cumin
  • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled
  • 2-3 drops of sesame oil
  • ~1 tsp. moist salt (I like Mayan Gold for this)
  • ~ 1/4 tsp. cracked black pepper

    Step 4: Add it all to the blender

    You don't have to do anything special here.  Just add the garbanzo beans, lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, cumin, peeled garlic cloves, sesame oil, salt, and pepper to your blender or food processor.

    Step 5: Blend it

    Blend all of the ingredients until you get a smooth and consistent texture, about 1 minute.  Taste your hummus, and if the flavors feel dull, add another 1-2 pinches of salt and blend for another 10 seconds.

    Step 6: Eat up

    Serve this in a nice bowl (ramekins are cheap and always make your food look better) and enjoy the fact that you have just made the best tasting hummus you will likely ever have.  Goes well with most loaves of bread, pita bread, pita chips, and veggies.  If you are really looking to try something new roast some chicken with this on top!
