The easiest way to make delicious homemade garlic bread



Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make garlic bread at home.  With a few simple tricks, you can have garlic bread that doesn't burn, and has garlicky goodness all the way through.

Step 2: Gather the tools you'll need

  • Aluminum foil
  • Cutting board
  • Chef's knife
  • Bread knife
  • Fork
  • A butter knife or small sturdy spatula
  • Small bowl for mixing

Step 3: Prepare your ingredients

  • 1 loaf of Italian or French bread (anything long will work)
  • 1 bulb fresh garlic for roasting
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, diced
  • 4 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened
  • 3-6 large basil leaves, diced
  • ~1 tsp. parsley, diced
  • ~1 tsp. salt with a medium-high moisture content (I like Mayan Gold for this)

    Step 4: Mix up your garlic butter

    Before you get going, make sure your oven is preheating to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
    In a small bowl, mix together the 2 cloves of diced garlic, basil leaves, parsley, butter, and salt.  Pro tip: if you can find Kerrygold Garlic and Herb butter, you can just use that and tell everybody you made it from scratch.

    Step 5: Slice the bread like a wooden snake...

    This is the most important step.  If you get it right, buttering all of your bread is a piece of cake and you'll have flavor all the way through your garlic bread.  Don't worry, is pretty easy.  You want to make lots of even cuts (about 1/2 in. to 3/4 in. wide) that go almost all the way through the bread, but not quite.  The bottom crust should still be intact and what you end up with is something similar to those wooden snake toys.  Do this for the entire length of the bread.

    Step 6: Apply the butter

    Take your garlic butter mixture and start adding the butter inside each of the cuts you just made in your loaf of bread.  Even if you only add the butter to one side of each cut, the pieces come back together in the oven and the garlic butter becomes evenly distributed on both sides of every slice of bread (except for the heel, but the heel is always the exception. It's the lone-wolf of bread parts).

    Step 7: Bake at 350F for 30 minutes

    Slice the top off of your bulb of garlic so you can see most of the cloves inside and wrap in foil.  Set aside for now.  Place your garlic bread on a piece of foil longer than your loaf and wrap, crimping along the top.  You'll want a good seal on this so the moisture says in and you don't get a bone-dry bread on your hands.  Place the wrapped garlic bread and clove of garlic into your preheated oven (350F) for 30-minutes.
    As an added bonus, since each of our buttered sides are unexposed, we also avoid burning any of our garlic bread.

    Step 8: Eat up 

    Once your 30-minutes is up, remove the bread and bulb of garlic from their respective foil garments and serve on a nice platter with the bread knife and butter knife handy.  The bread knife makes it easy for your guests to cut off as much or as little garlic bread as they like (tearing by hand also works pretty well), and the butter knife allows them to scoop out the roasted garlic from the bulb and spread it like butter.
